I was thinking next year all of us east coast riders or whoever wants to attend would want to start an annual meet. I think this would have an amazing turn out and it would be nice for all of us to get together. Please give your consensus on what you think relating dates or possible different locations.
I was thinking a weekend in may would be good since it starts to warm up and the cold won't scare anyone away
FZ1 aka FZ1OA has been doing it for years, we use to stay at Fontana Village. I went the first 2 years and it was great, the planners got sponsors for prizes I got a set of tires once for the second longest distance to the rally (851miles). There was a big barbecue on Sat, people had those dumb name tags on. It was fun with 200 FZ1's riding around the area, but it takes a lot of planning.
I'm down for whatever. I'm usually up there at least 4 times a year. I'd like to come with my toy hauler so I'll have to stay down near robbinsville or stecoah valley down on 28.
Or we could host it in Suches Ga. At Two Wheels of Suches. I'm sure Bill would not mind. Lodge there with rooms, plenty of camping spots, bunk houses to rent and good food at a reasonable price in the lodge. Not to mention at the driveway either direction takes you to the best roads in the country.
I heard great things about suches GA, I've never been but it's all about the same distance for me I'm down for whatever, I was just using the tail as a centerpoint since alot of us go there. If we can get a ruff estimate of how many people would attend I can do most of the planning and we can make this the first gsxs event ever to my knowledge
Fieromx3, I would agree with you but I'm all about learn from your mistakes and the only way to learn is by doing. My friend bought a brand new mt09 and crashed it in a parking lot at 133 miles and snapped the bars and cracked the tank and case covers and I told him I'll fix it and $800 later it was fixed and not even a week later at 350 miles he crashed it again because he got scared of a bump in a turn and it wasent that bad this time but he cracked his rim and other things and I told him that I'm not fixing it this time your going to learn and I made him go to the dealer to get it fixed and $1800 later he learned. Btw this all happend within one month and we took him to the tail and 226a diamondback and he started slow but he learned and synced with the bike and now he's at 3k and loves to ride instead of being scared
I’d try and go. Planning on going back to the Dragon next year sometime and think it would be fun to meet up with fellow GSXS owners! Stayed at the Two Wheel Inn this past June when I went. Nice place to stay and it has a garage that you can fit 2 motorcycles in attached to each room. It’s in Robbinsville NC.
Deals Gap is only a 2 hour ride from Suches down in GA. And I know good routes there and back. I'm good with either venue but at Deals I can't bring my Toy Hauler so I'd probably just camp there in a tent and bring the bike(s) on my open trailer. Motel at Deals books up earl an almost solid throug the riding season. i'm not crazy about the motel rooms there. They are all cinder block and it makes me feel like a jail cell. Foods better at the lodge in Suches as well. Dragons den has kinda dropped off last few years in food quality.
Like I said I'll go where ever just stating a few things up front since I have been to both places a lot over the 20+ years of riding up there.
The idea is great. Issue is that my work schedule varies and it would mean that I could not commit until a month or two before. That being said, I attended an event at Fontana Resort about 10 years ago and had a great time. If I could make it, I would be very into a road trip.
fieromx3 Deals Gap and the surrounding area is NOT the place to get cocky and test your limits. If you go down there with that mind set you WILL crash. The first time I did Deals Gap I had at least 25 years under my belt and I was humbled. Alot of guys go down there every year full of confidence and come back with their bike in a Uhaul truck.
Also, because others are testing limits, I found other cars and bikes crossing the center line on several occasions and coming into my line. One was nearly a Code Brown event. I would save the 'testing the limits" for the track. Here, even if you are safely riding, there are others getting in over their heads.
I am interested. Back in the spring a few friend and I went to Dahlonega, GA for a week, the roads in that area are fantastic. The riding is great in either NC or GA.
Any idea as to when? Probably should start throwing some dates up to get peoples schedules lined up. I'm flexible just need some idea of a date and of course the place.
I agree. I can take vacation anytime but it would be nice to know when we are looking to get together. I'm coming from MI. So I have about a 12 hour ride down
I'm currently thinking memorial day weekend as I have Saturday sunday monday and Tuesday off but that also leads to more people on the roads and slightly higher prices if that works for everyone and location so far from what I'm seeing is suches ga or the tail/ surrounding area so what dose everyone think?
I know for scheduling a weekend would work better, but I've always heard to stay away during the weekends due to crowding, and I can imagine that a holiday weekend would be pretty terrible on the dragon, but I've never been.
Do the lesser known, but just as good, roads in the area get equally as crowded on weekends/holidays?
Both have good amenities and are both located in premium riding areas. Both are only 2 hours riding one way apart. I do know Deals Gap resort stays booked most of the year and they have their season kick off that weekend with live music, food and is extremely crowded then.
EDIT: I am in by no means the organizer of this event. Strictly providing information about the two places based on my dealings with the two for the past 20 years or riding up there. Plus throwing out a date or 3 along the way.
Plenty of nearby lodging options. No crowds in my experience, but I've not been on a holiday weekend. I'm not aware of any "resort" type places, though, if that's what we're looking to do. Instead, I'd recommend staying in town (pick a town) so that we can walk to/from dining/drinks. I know this area pretty well and can set us up with daily routes.
Only suggesting this as an option; it's not necessarily my preference (plus I'm here twice a year anyway). It's been a while since I've been to the Tail, and I've not been to Suches, so those sound good to me.
I live there 6 mo out of the year, May thru Oct. Depending on the route, and I always take the "longest", I'm either 60mi from DealsGap, the dragon, and 30mi from TWO in Suches. I saw on one of the earlier posts some one had a toy box but was thinking of trailering bikes down. I will open my yard to anyone who's camper is self contained. The bride WILL NOT share the bathroom with "strangers". If we come up with enough extension cords you can have electric too. The yard is an open acre so probably room for a few. Roads are paved. Just throwing this out there. If you have an interest when the time comes get with me.
That was me. Mine is self contained but it is a bigger one at 30'. I was planning to camp just before Robbinsville NC on 129 at Hidden waters RV part if Deals Gap becomes the venue. That puts me about 18 miles from deals. If TWO at Suches is the venue I have boondock camped with it there many times. No issues.
My other option is to just bring the bike in back of my truck or on one of my open trailers and just tent camp at either place. Plus side of that is no reservation is needed.
Plenty of places to motel it in Robbinsville if Deals Gap is the venue. These type rally events with like wise owners usually turn out better if most everyone stays in the same general area and can enjoy time after the rides lying or shooting the BS.
Both places are about 8-9 hours from home for me depending on if I am pulling the house trailer or just in my truck. No way I am riding the GSX to either place.
That's the place I stayed with the FZ1 group, and really you can't beat the location. You could head north and get a taste of the Blue Ridge or even ride up 28 and visit Wheels Thru Time , or head down into GA. I had the hotel give me a wakeup call at 6am and I went down to Deals Gap early since it was so close and had the whole road to my self,I did a few passes and after a while I really started to get a feel for the road.
