Running about in New Zealand

I'm a 70 year old Examiner with the NZ branch of the UK-based Institute of Advanced Motorists. Last weekend was our annual conference at Lake Taupo in the north island. It was preceded by a trackday at the Bruce McLaren international circuit - what a blast, even for an old guy .

A timed 230 km/hr down the back straight and it gets up there pretty darned fast. The Metzler Roadtec 01's stood up much better than the PR4's on a previous outing a couple of years ago. Days like this is what keeps us young!

Am I right in thinking you have also tried the M7 RR? If so how do they compare? (or did you go for the PR4s?)
I've had several sets of the M7's now and for my style of riding I can't fault them. Problem is, there seams to be new tyres out every season and Im always wondering whether to stick with them or try something new

Hi Beaker,

Thanks - important to have fun at my age before it's too late

No, haven't tried the M7 RR although a friend had them on his F and was very happy with them. I've had 2 sets of PR4s and 2 sets of 01s. The 01s "feel" slightly quicker on the turn in but the difference is so slight as not to matter. I was going to try the Road 5s next but inclined to stick with the 01s. We'll see in a couple of thousand ks! The top brands all exceed what I'm capable of and it just comes down to personal preference. Apparently, RIDE magazine did a test and still preferred the 01s for what that's worth.

Thanks Trev. I committed heresy in a post over a year ago saying that the bike was "ok", but it did the job it was bought for. I didn't have an emotional connection with it and still don't - that's why I haven't spent heaps on it. However, I went on a riding clinic today with international suspension guru Dave Moss and boy, has he transformed the handling! Adjusted it every time we stopped. Here's one of his YouTube videos and to ride with him was an utter privilege:

Dave is a great guy and once you've been on one of his courses, advice is on-going. I guess the guy has to make a living with all that international travel! Amazingly, the course was partially sponsored by our local council as a safety initiative trial. Actually adjusting the suspension when it's at operating temperature rather than just cold static made a huge difference. Here's Dave adjusting my rebound on the ride but there are more pictures towards the end of this blog post: Confessions of an Ageing Motorcyclist: A most excellent week!
