GSXS750 shock upgrade

I was asked by some friends who have the 750 ifI could help them upgrade the rear shock.

Although we have a number of options for the 1000 the aftermarket shocks for the 750 are very rare with nothing from the major manufacturers yet. After some research we settled on using the shock from the 2008 - 2016 Yamaha R6 which MCN described as "The suspension has been revised internally and is arguably the best mass-produced stuff on any current production bike”

The 750 shock is a basic shock with only preload adjustment

The R6 shock is
  • Adjustable preload, with 11 stops instead of 7
  • Adjustable rebound (flat screwdriver)
  • Adjustable Fast compression (12mm socket)
  • Adjustable slow compression (3mm Hex)
  • Separate Nitrogen reservoir
  • Same travel as GSXS750
  • Exactly the same top mount as 750 stock shocks
  • Reservoir fits with no modifications
  • Similar spring rate to stock, but many other spring rates easily available

The Yamaha upper mount is the same as the GSXS750 whilst the bottom mount is female like the 750 but narrower, the R6 shock is also 32mm shorter so we designed an adaptor to fit the R6 shock

The adaptor bolts directly into the bottom of the shock and then onto the rear cushion

All the adjustments can be reached although the rebound needs a bit of work

The shock works superbly - smoother and plusher and yet more control at speed

R1 adaptor for the GSXS1000 next week

Apologies for the video. on my own and not a steady hand whilst trying to adjust things at the same time

I’m looking forward to your design on the 1000. I have the R1 shock installed on mine, love how it changed the bikes ride and handling. Only problem, I don’t like the fact I had to raise the rear appropriately 18mm to make it work. If your design keeps the stock height count me in for one. The 750 adapter looks great by the way.

You can't.
It was a all a con job by Pirate Paul before he skipped back to the UK it was alleged here on the Forum.
Same for his custom headers as well. A few here got burned bad, after buying a local shock, but the adapter never came nor the header.
