Do you hear the clunk when you shift from neutral to first? If so it is normal. If it clunks when you are starting to let the clutch out in first gear, maybe its related to the cush drive? Or maybe its the sound of your pillion falling off. Now I'm out of ideas.

Just to be clear, you are hearing the CLUNK as you are letting the clutch out to leave a stop? If so, here are some thoughts:

Check your rear sprocket nuts to be sure they are all tight. If they are coming loose (or some missing) you'll get a clunk

If not that, then check your counter-shaft sprocket nut. If it has 'play' in it, you'll get a clunk as you release the clutch.

How many miles on that chain? If it is 9,000 or more...could be the chain even if it 'seems' good.

If it isn't any of that...then the potential problems get more expensive (transmission?) Let's hope for a 'simple' fix first.

Don’t rule out loose head bearings or wheel bearings!

I hear this on mine too, and I think it is from the rear caliper. The caliper is mounted to the swing arm by a sliding mechanism which is not snug. There is a bit of play in it and I think it causes the clunk sound when you take off from a stop - especially when the rear brake is applied to come to a stop. I might be wrong, although I have not heard the clunk at any time other than taking off from a stop while riding.
