Hey guys,

I've noticed my bike pulling to the left when I take my hands off of the bars recently, I'm not sure if this is normal as I'm not sure if I've seen it happen or not. I know the roads crown and I'm in Australia so it'll pull to the left but it seems to happen on many different roads and at many different speeds. I checked the rear axle blocks with a ruler and they are even so I don't think it's that. I lost a bar end mirror on a ride last week and am waiting for my replacement to come, would something that small cause the problem?

Thanks in advance guys!

Losing a LEFT bar-end mirror would indeed cause the bike to pull left, often dramatically so. Even something as small and flat as a bar-end mirror has a lot of leverage on the bar. My guess is that it's your bar-end mirror.

It's possible your rear tire is pointed excessively to the right. Did you account for the massive difference between a 3.5 inch front and the 6 inch wide rear? A straightedge from the rear would have 95mm - 60mm = 35 mm space to the front.

That has not been my experience as it has never been an issue for me on any bike I have owned and only ran on mirror …. But also more than simple enough for the OP to figure that out on his own by moving his mirror to the other side and trying it out.

The original poster mentioned he took his hands off the handlebar in order for the bike to start pulling to the left.

All my bikes with a single left-side bar mirror pull to the right if I take my hands off the bars, and that interestingly goes with bicycles too. I wouldn't think it's noticeable if you didn't take your hands off the bars. A bar-end mirror, though, is in the best (or worst) place to exert leverage.

Have you recently adjusted chain tension via moving the rear wheel? The hash marks on swingarms are notoriously not accurate and if the rear wheel is sitting in place and cocked where the front part of the tire is to the right of the centerline of the bike, and thus the rear part of the wheel is left of the centerline of the bike.....even just a little, that could account for it. There needs to be exactly equal distance from the centerline of the swingarm pivot bolt to the centerline of the rear axle bolt. I have an adjustment tool that slides into the holes of each of those points and cones that make the stainless rod perfectly centered in the holes. Then measurements are made on both the right and left side to make sure that they are equal. I dont' know if anyone makes them these days, but I bought mine probably 15 years ago or more from a machinist down in South Carolina....USA.

Definitely worth checking the steering head bearings; I spent a couple months chasing that on my old Bandit. Suggest lifting the front wheel off the ground, traverse the forks from lock to lock- if you feel a notch anywhere then the steering head bearings are worn out or possibly loose.
