Boy what a pain that Suzuki filter was to get off, too cheap to spring for the socket. But now fresh oil and k&n filter with the nut. Took her for a rip and let the rpm climb and I'm happy as a clam. Did the TPS adjustment yesterday. I am stoked with this girl. Hitting hwy 49 tomorrow morning.

I finally got mine changed today too, and what an adventure. I couldn't get mine off with the tools at hand and I had been working on it on and off for days. I finally ordered the size removal tool suggested in another thread (14 flute x 68mm), well even that just skipped over the filter so I had to start getting creative. I stuck a piece of sand paper between the wrench and filter. It still skipped. I was about to freak out, because I didn't want to do anything so drastic that I couldn't ride it to the dealer for them to service. After thinking about it for a while I went down into my bike cave a cut a piece of old bicycle inner tube and folded a layer of that about half way around the wrench. I stuck it on and gave it a few taps with a hammer, and twisted and "thump" it skipped, but then I felt the filter move a bit. Yes... success. It finally came off. The rest of the change was cake. New HiFloFiltro 138RC (with nut on top), 3.4 quarts of Motul 300V, and my S1000F and I are happy campers.

Interesting how things that are supposedly the same don't work the same in reality. That wrench worked perfectly for me on the OEM filter, and I cranked on it pretty hard with an 18" ratchet. Sometimes you just have to get creative working on these mechanical beasts. At least on these bikes we're not dealing with rusted bolts like when I'm wrenching on the '94 Miata. PB Blaster is my friend.

Well, G-Dub, I may have done some rounding of the edges on the filter with my previous unsuccessful attempts, so I can't blame the wrench. In the end, I'm just relieved to be done with that satanic stock filter, ;)

I originally tried the wrench, and it slipped for me, too. I got the original filter off with a strap-style filter wrench, and moving it like 1/16" at a time (with lots of wrist scrapes). I'm not looking forward to it on this bike... but maybe I'll try the trick with the tool and the rubber (no, not that trick).

Hi Mike,

I have a question for you.
Is this the first oil change done to your GSX (600 miles/1.000km)?
I'm asking this because I'm not sure if Motul 300v is the best option for the first oil change.

Some say it is better to use at this point a semi-synthetic oil and after another 5.000 Km to change it with full synthetic oil.

These days I'll change the oil at 1.000 km break in service, but I'll use the Motul 5000 10w40 oil.

Yes, I have 575 miles so it's the first. Also, I've followed all of the break-in threads on a lot of different motorcycle forums and web sites. I think 99% of it is just opinions based on faulty assumptions. I always use full synth, even at the first change.

Yes, I had 575 miles on it, so it was my first oil change. I've read many threads on the different motorcycle forums and websites about when and if to change to synthetic and I think 99% of it is BS based on amateur opinions and fault assumptions. I've always used full synth in all of my bikes, even at first oil change, but to be honest, I just don't think it makes much difference. Just my amateur opinion.
