I haven't bought a GSXS yet. I have test ridden one and i think it's the future of my biking life and i'm at a time in my life were i can treat myself to a new toy. Never had a new bike before and been riding the same bike for the last 12 years.

When i do get one it will be ridden hard from the dealers..........Once i'm out of earshot..:)

Everyone is way over thinking this. 1 extra oil change at 100 miles for $35 with a good chance to give extra life and performance to an engine over its life is a no brainer. And for all the "engineers know what their talking about, I don't need more maintenance" crowd, the engineers WILL get over ruled by accounting and marketing to keep a product at minimum cost for a specfied service life. I.E. Suzuki will build as cheaply as possible and only require minimum maintenance to get them past warranty. It makes them look better and has you buying a new bike sooner.

Just out of interest how many of you out there keep a bike long enough to worry about premature wear?
Me. I'm going to run it in on a dyno, oil change then another oil change after a few hundred K's. I rode my DRZ400SM like I stole it from the start 4 years ago and when I put the big bore kit in I'll do the same or dyno it. I have no plans to get rid of either bike.

I simply do not believe that planned obsolescence is ever part of a Japanese product strategy. Even though that strategy is probably the #1 factor in the failure of the American auto industry requiring the bailouts, it just simply isn't the case with Japanese, or even European, products.

It's just simply not acceptable to be part of their culture, they just have too much pride. The link to an article below about the Japanese school system is the perfect example. In addition, I read all the time on message forums about Suz, Kaw, Honda engines being bulletproof and going 100, 200k + miles. On one forum a guy has a Honda CBR600 going 300k miles. Unfortunately though most bikes get wrecked long before the engine will ever see and signs of unusual wear. I also don't believe that whether you make your 1st oil change at 100 miles or 3000 miles will make one bit of difference. I spent enough time working with some of the best oil and engine engineers in the US to have a pretty solid fact based opinion on the subject, but that is my opinion.

Service life is just a basic element of any business. I love Japanese ethics but they play by world business rules like anyone else. Especially a company like Suzuki who is still reeling from 2009. Also, engines may go 200-300k but with how much service and what level of performance. I'll say it one more time: $35 is little to risk and lots to gain. Now i'm done. Really good dialogue though. Thanks.

I don't think anyone actually ever disagreed with you Gixxus. The question was Is it worth bothering with or waiting for six hundred miles?1000kms.
Personally, I would have had more of an issue if the question was to use a high quality race oil or just a budget oil.
Some oil manufacturers are now recommending which type/grade of oil to use on your specific bike. Which, in my opinion is great. Answers all the questions like, should I use fully synthetic, semi, mineral etc.
Oil is the engines life blood. I intend to keep this one for a while so I will be worrying about long term life and will be giving it regular servicing and using the right grade:D
Nothing wrong with a few extra quid for piece of mind:D

That's been my experience too "slow rider" and ive been riding bikes legally for44 years. Commando for 30 years and more recently Honda 919 for 13 years and SV1000 for 8 years. I like to cane them when the rebel in me appears, only changed my Honda plugs at 60k,have never had to do the tappets and the bike has been knicked and actually came back washed? Never broken down and in nearly 80kmiles doesn't seem to mind when it gets an oil change/although I do use fully synthetic. Reguarly get 55-60mpg and not many of my mates on R1s etc leave me far behind on the twistees. My GSX-S1000 has a lot to live up to but I love it.

Well right or wrong I just changed oil at 150 miles. Cost me around $40. Did it myself but dealer gave me wrong size gasket for drain plug so I reused old one this time. Oil looked good and even with a flashlight didn't see any shiny oil shavings, but at least I have peace of mind now!

I cant see it hurting anything to leave it in. I did my last new bike at 40 miles.

I found a some metal shavings that were probably headed to the filter, but had not made it there. It felt good to get those out. I could see not doing it if the cost was 200.00. Its not. Its 40.00 at best, so why not try it?

Does the Gixxes come with synthetic oil already in it or dyno oil? Just wondering which I should get for my first oil change.
