Yesterday, whilst riding in second gear, I must have accidentally touched the gear shifter as I was suddenly driving in neutral. But then I tried pushing it back up to second gear and I heard a sqeaky sound (as if I hadn't pull the clutch).
I tried a second time, really pulling the clutch but the same sound. Wouldn't go to second gear. So I lowered speed by braking and put it in first gear which worked fine.
Shouldn't I have been able to go to 2nd directly?

Funny you should mention 2nd gear. I've had a couple of scary moments where I've gone into 3rd let the clutch go and bang I'm still in 2nd. I'm going to mention it to my dealer as when the bike was new I had quite a few neutrals turning into a corner where I could swear it went into 2nd but the display for gear indicator was blank. Nearly stacked it turning right once due to 2nd gear not working. Hasn't done it since service but now it won't go into 3rd under hard acceleration all the time. I now give it an extra push up on lever and even changed lever position but it still does it every now and then.

Although I've only managed 50 very wet miles, one niggle I have found is that first to neutral will go into second more often than not, so then I have to knock it out of second and in to neutral.

Changing gears is correct on my Suzy...you can allways try to adjust a bit the clutcb and see if this works better. You can gear up easely even without using the clutch at 3000 rpm.

I'm still waiting on my GSXS1000 to turn up at the dealers, but I used to own a 2008 GSXR750. I put Motul 5100 oil in it at a service and experienced much the same as what you're talking about. It wouldn't always go into second under hard acceleration, It'd drop out of second and back to neutral just after I'd changed gears.

I changed the oil, no further problems.

A mate had a similar issue with his Kawasaki ZX9R, used a different oil and it went away.

I don't know if the oil had anything to do with it, but the problem conveniently disappeared after changing oil.

I'm having a different problem. Let say i'm slowing down to the red light, shift from 3rd > second and a small push to Neutral. One out of 10 times, the first push for 1st gear at green light will be a cracked sound and it's still N and I will have to push the gear level 1 more time to get to the first gear.
I'm experimenting by shift from 3>2>1 and pull the gear to N at the stop to see if it fixes the problem but somehow I doesn't feel comfortable with doing this.

I've always gone from 2nd to 1st when stopping and then back up to neutral.
Mainly because it was easier than fishing about for neutral from second. It's a habit I've got into and I've always done it that way, not saying it's the best way but it's what's always worked for me.
Saying that. My Suzi had the tiniest bit of clutch drag when the lever was still fully in. I did move the biting point a little further out and that improved gear change and pulling away quite a bit.

Yep that's how I do it also, been riding for nearly 30 years and I don't think I have ever tried to even go from second to neutral , it probably is OK to do I agree but it's just habit for me also,

I also change down the box to 1st then if the need arises i pop it in N from first. When doing advanced riding i was taught to keep the bike in 1st and leave myself somewhere to go that way if i see a car coming from behind i am already in gear and i have a better chance to move out of the way. If i am honest sometimes when there is a traffic light that's taking ages and there is already cars stopped behind me i will pop it in N to save my wrist but i have to say having it in 1st ready to go has saved me twice in the last 10 years where i could see/hear cars approaching to fast or locking tires being able to shoot down the side of the car in front and thus not getting in the middle of a car sandwich is a very good thing

I'm living in a very crowded city, there's now and then I have to put the bike in neutral and move it with my legs to save my wrist.
With my previous Yamaha, it is much easier for me and the gear box to move from second to neutral than from first to neutral, especially with low speed.
In fact, the same can be said for the Zuki during the first month. And then I tried to loosen the clutch cable to ease my wrist and this problem happenned and still exist even after I change the clutch tension back to stock.

Marty has hit the nail on the head

Marty's comments about changing the oil is the same experience that I had. After the first service my GSX-S had a horrible gear change and it was hard to find neutral. I changed to Fuchs oil and it was all sweet again. Oils ain't oils.

It's probably time to do the clutch adjustment in the motor as well. We've probably all been giving the clutch a bit of a hard time. I know I have been meaning to do it but just haven't got around to it.

Make sure you are removing the drive sprocket cover and cleaning in there really well. Especially if gear indicator goes blank. Chain wax gunks that stuff up.
My experience so far
