How all of us can know, the fuel is not always filtered well by the vendor.
In the last two bike I always installed this simply fuel filter on the charge hole.
This help to save our pump and filter from dirty that cause expensive damage.
Here a model for our bike arrived just today.

I've never had a contaminated fuel problem in 20 odd years of motoring in the UK. Is this an issue worldwide?

You wouldnt have thought it was an issue in Europe but it appears looking on a report on diesel in 2014 Italy is on par with Russia, South Africa & India on fuel quality.

Only glancing at the colour chart on this survey (page 7), but ill bear it in mind as im travelling around France/Italy on this bike next year.

I recently completed a Hydraulic course and we were told that before any hydraulic oil is used it should be filtered before use as it often comes from the distributors dirty so the same with fuel would not surprise me, have you ever looked in the bottom of a fuel tank after a couple of years :(
