Key doesn't come out dead left

New 2018 GSX S750

Some D-bag hit my brand new bike while parked at my apartment, no note of course , handlebars took brunt of hit and were pushed askew. I got everything back center and thought all was good, but now my key doesn't come out when steering is dead left like it should. I have to slightly push handlebars to the right than key comes out without issue. Fearing that something is miss-aligned or broken. Any one have any advise?

Thanks in advance.

That sucks. your handlebars were bent? And you mean by "dead left" in the steering lock position, so now you can't lock it?

There is a tab that protrudes under the steering head/ignition assembly, when you turn the key to far left lock position, the tab extends and thus locks to a protrusion on the frame. See if you can find this locking tab and make sure it is extending all the way out when you lock.

Just an idea.

Otherwise, cheaper/easier to buy a disk lock than a new ignition switch and key, if the internals of the ignition switch were damaged.

Not bent as far as I can tell. Man....I hope not.

Yes, I turn steering all the way to left and can't get key to lock position.

If I turn the steering slightly to the right, than I can put key in lock and remove it. Prior to it getting hit I had no issues.

One time I had an issue getting it out of lock to start the bike too. Seems like something is mis-aligned due to impact.

Check what I said above, the way the bars lock when you turn the key full left is mechanical. There is a tab that comes out underneath when you turn the key. Make sure it is moving all the way out freely

Hi New OP OGsx,
The fault is rather obvious to you - there's workshop work needed or new parts if you want it back as before.
You should assume that something with the key operated silver coloured pin that passes through the black plastic curved surround into the headstock is now out of alignment.
Assuming the bike was pushed but did not fall over the obvious to me action is to lift the cover at the front of the tank (behind the key mechanism) off the bike and see if the key mechanism housing itself has turned a fraction. It would be bolted in place, perhaps with tamper proof bolts or screws.

The pin though the headstock is a very close fit and would not allow much movement, but when it locked, the bars can still be turned about an inch at the bar end.
Down at the bottom of the headstock at the bottom triple clamp end are the final limits of turning blocks which allows the some freedom of motion to get the key out when the parts are in tension.
Have a look there too.

Rob.

I wouldn't be too worried about your case as long as there is no mis-alignment that would cause issues with ride handling. As rapido said, have a look as the lock is mechanical. Mine doesn't lock when it is on extreme left anyways and a slight movement to right, gets through.

Mines been like that from new, it's never been dropped.
To get the key out i have to move the bars away from full lock about a centimeter.
Are you sure it's bust?

Thanks for the info about the pin from the ignition. That is what it is. The lock pin is mis-aligned when dead left. That is new after the drop. I wonder if the ignition was knocked a skew. Might take off fairings and investigate.
