strange noise on cold engine

Contrary to the thread title, I have strange noise on hot engine start.
I had my 2015 model for 5 years without any noises at all.
With my 2021 I sometimes get a quite pronounced rattle when starting from hot after a brief 2-3 min stop. Any longer 10 - 15 mins say, nothing at all, no problem from cold either.

Maybe there is an issue with the engine lubrication (oil pump) or maybe is just the quality of engine oil (too thin when hot).
Better ask you dealer for a pro opinion regarding this problem.

Mine is pretty good from warm but struggles on cold staring where I have to use a bit of throttle.

Have not ridden mine much, if at all, since my previous post #81 so can't say about rattle.

recently experiencing this , coincidence that its cold weather? Top Right hand side of engine. Bikes running fine though

Fired mine up today after about 3 months layoff and it too was reluctant to start but kicked in without any throttle input.
Had a 35 mile ride and did not experience the rattle I mentioned in #81.

To be fair , the last 2 days have been very mild for February , which is normally the coldest month in the UK & the rattle disappears after its warm Wasn't making noise in traffic either & I have 100mile round trip p/day for work , also using 10w30 oil as it'll warm up quicker - fan comes on quicker though!

Think I'm gonna be more anal with my oil changes rather than 3-3.5k I think i'll do them at 2-2.5k with the oil filter every other change , given that the UK has drastic temperature fluctuations & I've just completed 26800 miles with all my own maintenance since the 600 mile service cant see this being overkill.

Is it worth changing or looking at the cam chain tensioner , how difficult is it to access , seems to be a chore on most bikes?

Hi @Hiei , I am getting notifications for your direct message but I am unable to respond. Likely because you're new to the forum and you need more interaction. That said, I'll respond here.

I am no longer experiencing this noise on cold starts. It healed itself, or I've gotten used to it (or both). I did switch to Motul 7100 4T oil and that seemed to make an overall difference in reducing engine noise in general.

My noise has disappeared. The first time I turned it on this year in March (after not running for 5 months over winter) it did not make the noise, and it has not made the noise any more this year. I am baffled but I'm glad the problem has disappeared for me. Interesting theory about the sprag clutch. I did use only synthetic oil (Rotella T6).
