Now that I think about it, I HAVE started my RR without earplugs in and it is noisy. If it's the same kind of noise as the GT, it's not something I'd worry about. I've got 22,000 miles on the RR and the engine is smooth as silk, noise or not.
Don't confuse "noisy" with "a distinct tapping on hot startup that goes away after a short time". Those are two different things. Pretty much all motorcycle engines are noisy, some more than others. Those noises are normal... anything that taps then stops tapping is not normal. Best case, nothing further comes of it. Worst case, it gets worse and causes a major failure. Either way, an intermittent tapping like that is not operating as designed.

I wear ear plugs full time. I can hear it with them in, but I may miss it at times because of them.
The first two times that I heard it (right before first service and right after), it was a lot louder... Very clear through the ear plugs and very concerning. I think it was the same noise because it sounded the same, tapped at the same frequency, and was during the same conditions, but it got quieter from then on and has stayed at that volume level since (when it does it).

Suzuki has put incorrect shim sizes in a Hayabusa the latest one and the engine let go. It was posted on ADVrider and I clicked on it and watched the guys tear down and he proved it had incorrect shims under the buckets on the cylinder that let go. He could not warranty claim it because he had been racing it and bought it for that. He has had many Busas and never a problem like this. So things are possible all it takes is a mistake on assembly and in this case must have been the same guy building the engines. Just grasping at straws here I have no proof that this is what the Busa suffered from in the end. The tapping is concerning on the hot start I will agree with @Symmetry on that. The way it goes away in a few seconds is not normal and mine doesn't do it right at start up it is usually a second or two then the tapping starts. And it had not made this tapping on any cold start. It did rattle once on a cold start but that was not the tapping sound we all hear.

I went to a Suzuki demo event and finally got to ride the GT for the first time. I listened for the noise and did not hear it. The bike I rode had just under 2000 kms on it.
It seams pretty simple to me … it either is going to be an issue or it isn’t.
I believe the NEW design has been around since the 2020 Katana so basically 2 years with no known catastrophic failures. At this point I would think there is enough miles out that that issues would arise. I am not sure what other recourse besides if we get the noise we contact Suzuki and your dealer.

Do not see how they could screw this up, the engine has been around since 2005-2008 then revived in 2016 with the new GSX naked and F. They revised a few things in it since 2005-2008 motors which were GSXR engines. I am starting to think it is the nature of the beast since not one has failed to date. Think rattly BMW engines when they all start up and the noise goes away in a few seconds to a minute. I have a friend who has every BMW engine since the air heads and they all do this. I am not talking about the RR inline four engines and we know where that design was copied from, the K5 GSXR engine way back when. Back then Suzuki dominated World Superbike series with Corona bikes and Troy Corser on the then new K5 GSXR 1000. You want to beat the best you go copy them. BMW bought a K5 and completely took it apart and in no time the S1000RR came to life. Todays history lesson, I'll go do some real work now....
Agree 100%. Just weird.
Well, shoot...I probably thought my BMW RR didn't rattle, but maybe it's because I'm wearing earplugs when I start it up. Are you guys that are hearing this noise wearing earplugs?

Really? The RR engine was copied from Suzuki? Seems like an infringement issue...did Suzuki ever challenge BMW on this? Very interesting!
I dont hear any noise when wearing ear plugs, its when I take them out I heard the hot start noise
It's either an issue or it isn't. But it gives me pause...my dealer has a GT and I'm negotiating a deal on it, but having in the back of my mind the thought that a "catastrophic" failure could lurk in the engine is a trifle worrisome!
I have been wrong before but I have to believe if it was .. it would be by now

I think if it were to turn catastrophic someone on here would have had it happen by now. Mine has not been babied and I don't baby any of my bikes. I ride them as they were designed to be used. I don't live at the rev limiter that is pointless all engines taper off with power way before that signature sound. I take care of maintenance items on time or before and only use manufacturer's parts. Like was said earlier this current design has been in the lineup since 2020. Google it you cannot find one thing on it as a failure. The engine is in the Katana, GSX and the GTs.

I used to own a Ducati Diavel and always rode with earplugs. The first time I started it without earplugs I was like "holy crap". The mechanical clacking was unreal. I guess maybe the desmo valve train. But it never failed. I put 24,000 miles on it and then traded it for a boat. So far my 2016 F has been bullet proof for 28,000 miles. I just don't believe that Suzuki would put out something that is prone to failure.

That said, I am keeping my 2016, primarily for other reasons.
Harley owners have an advantage...their bikes are so loud that even an engine failure sounds "normal"...lol!

Hence why I haven’t move my Kawasaki V1k for a Pan America yet.
My 22 naked has the hot tapping every now and then. 970 miles currently, first noticed it around 2-300 miles.

Somebody has to have figured out what it is by now...?
Just a noisy Suzuki 🤷‍♂️

My 21 GSX-R1000R with the mechanical VVT is a loud mutha idling, sounds like marbles in a can. They’re all like that but never hear of a failure. I quit thinking about it long ago. It runs fine just like the GSX GT+. Maybe Suzuki is trying to build character into their once silky smooth sounding engines 🤣 or it could be they’re simply using less sound deadening engine covers now which increase weight a little along the way. But increase engine noise at certain times.

I thought a video having the sound on it would have been posted here if it was that loud.
Hayabusa, didn't Suzuki recall it for faulty cam chain tensioner's three times till they got it finally right on the previous model ?

I had a Bandit 1250, probably the first year of production, where Suzuki told the Dealers to check the valve clearances at the first 1000km service.
They called it an 'Advisory' not a recall, so I copped the extra labour.
Of course, it was in spec, and at the 12K service, the Guys said no check required based on other bikes.

I do hear the timing chain in there and also some slight tapping, I think it is normal. I had a S1000R before and it was way louder and also normal. Many people with the BMWs did not like it and fitted mechanical tensioners. One other observation I made back then was, that the noise was also dependent on the oil level. The dealership liked to put 0.5 Liter more oil than needed and I think it causes extra tension on the timing chain. Which makes it quieter but wears it out faster. I know 2 guys that needed a new timing chain after 30k kms on their S1000Rs.

Mine do The same only hot .came after först service .dont notice it before 1000km.
The dealer here have no cloud what it is.
Update from Suzuki on ticking noise at startup:

Subject: Ticking noise - JS1EK12D4N7100021

Hello ****: As to the ticking noise inquiry, Suzuki Motor USA, LLC. does encourage you to have the dealer take a look or listen to it.

This motorcycle does use an oil pressure fed cam chain tensioner adjuster. It is kind of like a shock absorber for the cam chain. Sometimes it can take a few seconds for it to “pump up” and find the proper tension for the cam chain. When it does this, it can make a tick sound, and this is normal. As the cam chain wears and stretches over the life of the engine, this sound can get a little quieter, or louder, depending on where the tensioner adjuster is in its range. Engine temperature, and oil temperature upon start up can affect this too.

We hope this information is helpful.
